Things to Know about Cannes Film Festivals
Cannes film festival or Le Festival International du Film de Cannes is one of the most prestigious film festivals in this world. It was firstly held from 20 September to 5 October in 1946 in the city of Cannes, Southern French. From that time, the festival is always held annually in May except from several times. It is due to the large reporting of mass media, this non-public festival that is attended by many stars and movie producers to launch and sell their works to the distributors all around the world. The most prestigious award given by Cannes is Palme d’Or for the best movie. Sometimes, this award is divided for some movies in a year. However, the jury panel of festival that consists of movie experts gives other awards including grand prize; the second most prestigious award. Some other awards that are given in the Cannes Film Festivals are named in French that are divided into some categories. The categories are Feature Films, Short Films, Palme d’Or based on the origin countries, and Films with Cannes Theme. The awards for feature films are including Grand prix, Prix de la mise en scene, Prix du Jury, Camera d’Or, Prix du scenerio, Prix d;interpretation feminine du Festival de Cannes, Prix d’interpretation masculine du Festival de Cannes, and Prix un certain regard. Meanwhile, short films are including two main awards namely Palme d’Or du Festival de Cannes – Court Metrage and Prix du Jury – Court Metrage. Next, the Palme d’Or based on the origin countries are freely given to the best movies in any country in this world. Lastly, films with Cannes theme are those films with theme or topic around Cannes festival. As an example, there was a movie entitled Evening in Byzantium produced in 1978. The film tells about a group of terrorists that made a chaos in a festival. The film was based on a novel.
Talking about the awards for the best reels of movies based on the origin countries, it seems that Hollywood movies still become the winners in term of number. Yes, many of the awards are for US movies. The movies are considered as the best and qualified whether in term of film production and cinematography. More than that, the movies are also supported by many best and qualified actors. It is not something surprising for sure. As you know, Hollywood is indeed still being the center of films all around the world. It is not saying that Hollywood movies must be good. However, many of them are still better in general compared to the movies from other countries. Sure, even if it is said that movies from US are those who find awards from Cannes the most, it doesn’t mean that other countries don’t have any chance. In fact, many movies from Italia, French, United Kingdom, Japan, Hong Kong, Spain, Turkey, Switzerland, and others are also listed as the best movies in Cannes Film Festivals.
